Treadmills and Hyper Dogs

My dog is a Parson Terrier and is literally insane. I thought i knew what a hyper dog was like before I got her, apparently I had no idea. She is a handful. She seems to have endless energy that never ends. I would play with my dog for 2 hours a day or more and she would not tire out. After months of going crazy I finally decided to try using a treadmill to run/walk her for a few hours a day. Seriously, hours! I can’t say she is any less insane than she was but she defiantly is much quieter, happier and less aggressive. She still has her insane side but with less edge.

So how did I get her to like her treadmill and use it… It took about 2 weeks of getting the dog use to the treadmill before she really took to it. Here is how I did it.

  1. Built the treadmill
  2. put the dog on the treadmill
  3. forgot about the treadmill
  4. put the dog on the treadmill and turn it on for 2 min with the dog on it
  5. build up time over 2-4 weeks

Honestly, after a few weeks of being ont he treadmill each day for a few hours your dog WILL calm down and be less on edge and listen much better. Your dog will thank you for giving them a chance to work out and burn their excess energy.

Why Train Your Dog & Release Energy

Are you wondering if you really should train your dog or force your dog to learn new things? Did you know that it is healthy for your dog to learn new tricks and actions. Your dog wants to, it is his lively hood. Dogs do not want to just sit around or just play tug-o-war all day. They want something that will challenge their mind and physical skills. A dog at all times wants to please his or her master.

So you are probably wondering what you can do to challenge your dog or even how to challenge your dog. You can do simple things like teaching them sit, heal stay and other commands. These types of commands help make your dog a happy well balance dog. Another thing you can do is take your dog for at least for a walk once a day. Giving your dog a walk each day will release its energy and allow him/her to be happy. I know it sounds crazy but your dog has to get out and have organized walks and learning time or they can get stored energy they must burn off.

A good idea to help release your dog’s energy is buying a treadmill. It is easy to teach your dog to get on the tread and run/walk by themselves while you do other things. Most dogs need miles of walking each day and this is a great way to burn most their energy off and then play with them for 20-30 min after instead of an hour.

By doing these things you will find our dog being more happy and less playful to the point of annoying you.
